A towering figure at 6' 6", Henry Barber was perhaps as unique as the place he lived, the northwest rim of the Okefenokee Swamp. His home is today on the National Register of Historic Places, and according to the folks who have developed the homestead as an Okefenokee attraction, it is the oldest settler's cabin in the area.
On three occasions attempts were made to map the local area and Obediah was the man chosen to guide the explorers into the swamp from his home just a few miles south of Waycross. Barber was father to 20 children from three wives.
