August 29, 1931 Celebration is held on St. Simons Island for the completion of a highway from Atlanta to Brunswick, GA. This meant it was now possible to travel to most cities in Georgia on paved road.

August 29, 1957 The 1957 Civil Right Act is passed in the Senate by a vote of 60 to 15. It was the first Civil Rights legislation passed in the United States in 79 years.

August 29, 2008 Alpharetta-based Integrity Bank, with assets of 11.1 billion dollars is closed by the FDIC. All assets are purchased by Regions Financial over the weekend.
