A Georgia Peach in the truest sense of the word, this Smyrna born actress starred in the title role of Pretty Woman, a "prostitute with a heart of gold" tale that turned out to be a mega-hit and made Roberts a mega-star. The 1990 production was her top in box office revenue, but is one of a string of hits in which she has won the collective heart of America. Roberts received a nomination for Best Actress for the role but lost to Jodie Foster ("Silence of the Lambs").
Early career successes include Mystic Pizza (1988), a story of teen girls coming of age at a local pizza parlor and Steel Magnolias where Roberts stands out in an ensemble cast. She garnered her first Oscar nomination (Best Supporting Actress) for this role.
Her acting ability is wide ranging, playing in the span of two years, a whimsical Tinkerbell (Hook, 1991), an abused wife (Sleeping with the Enemy, 1991) and a law student who topples a sitting president (The Pelican Brief, 1993). It would be her portrayal of the title character in Erin Brockovich (2000) that would finally garnish her career with the ultimate prize -- an Academy Award.
