Name derivation: Named in honor of Col. John Laurens, who fought at the battle of Savannah, and surrendered the city of Charleston for his commander, General Greene. George Washington personally requested that he receive the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, which he did. He was killed during a battle trying to rid South Carolina of its British oppressors.
