May 4, 1989 An explosion in Marion County is attributed to a 90kg explosive device in a bomb accidentally released in a rural area. The bomb was intended for the practice range at Fort Benning.

Name derivation:Named in honor of Francis Marion, the swathy leader of South Carolina Patriots, especially following the American defeat at Charleston. Known as the Swamp Fox, Marion's tactics would later be developed into what we today know as "guerilla warfare."
