Macon County, Alabama was the site of a chilling "experiment" begun by the Public Health Service (PHS) and continued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, who absorbed the PHS. During the Tuskegee Syphilis Study black males were enrolled, never told they had the disease, and never treated for syphilis once a cure became available in 1947.
