  Union troops enter Macon, Georgia

Threatened twice previously (Stoneman's Raid and the March to the Sea), Macon finally came under Union control when leading elements of General James Wilson's cavalry entered the city. This was the end of what is commonly called "Wilson's Raid" that began on March 22, 1865 in Chickasaw, Alabama. Fighting in Georgia began on April 15 and with little opposition Wilson made it to Macon in 5 days.
