June 6, 1586 Sir Francis Drake, an English privateer, lays siege to St. Augustine, capital of Spanish Florida. The Spanish garrison decides to flee the city, which Drake sacks, leaving none of the 250+ homes standing. Following the attack, Spain considers abandoning the city of St. Augustine.
June 26, 1586 Sir Francis Drake, having sailed up the Southeastern coast, arrives at Roanoke Island.
