September 25, 1878 The National Weather Service opens an office at the Kimball Opera House in Atlanta. At the time, the building served as the state capital

December 20, 1878 Early on the morning fire destroyed the Branch Mint at Dahlonega, Georgia. The building had been given to North Georgia College by the U. S. Congress in 1873. This date is often given as December 19.
